Intro to Devised Theater: A Workshop

Join us at San Antonio's Magik Theatre on June 7 and 8 for an action packed weekend of devised and physical theater. Participants will have the opportunity to train in multiple forms of devised theater, designed to build your ability to work as part of an ensemble and strengthen your individual presence and power.

Intro to Viewpoints

Friday June 7 - 6:30-8:00pm

Instructor: Ruthie Buescher

Developed by Anne Bogart, Viewpoints is a physical theater method that trains actors to listen, collaborate, and understand their own movement and motivations. A foundational building block for much devised theater, Viewpoints is an essential method for any performer seeking to build a more powerful presence onstage.

Intro to Theater of the Oppressed

Saturday June 8 - 10:00am-12:00pm

Instructor: Lizzy Gore

Explore the ensemble-building games, imaging, and story-building techniques of Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed to surface and explore everyday stories as a kaleidoscopic reflection of our historic and political moment. Create an interactive, choose-your-own adventure play to perform by the end of the workshop.

Intro to Moment Work

Saturday June 8 - 1:00-2:30pm

Instructor: Alex Grubbs

This workshop will be an introduction to the process of creating devised theater founded by luminary theater group Tectonic Theater Project. Spearheaded by the original company members under the direction of Moises Kaufman, the "Moment Work" technique approaches creativity and discovery in a collective and collaborative fashion. Participants will get an introduction to the process and theory, as well as an opportunity to compose and collage moments of their own.

The cost for registration for each session is $25. The cost for registration for the entire weekend (four sessions) is $75 (a 25% discount).

What ages is the workshop open to?
- The workshop is open to ages 16 and up. If you are registering a minor, please indicate that on the registration form. If you will also be attending, please be sure to fill out a separate form for yourself.

Where is the workshop?
- The workshop is being sponsored by and held at Magik Theatre (420 South Alamo St, San Antonio. TX 78205).

Do I need to have experience in devised theater to attend?
- No! This workshop is open to all, and will be introductory. However, if you do have experience, you are also welcome, and will find it to be a refreshing opportunity to reenter the work.

Is this workshop ADA accessible?
- Unfortunately, due to limitations of the space, this workshop is not ADA accessible.

What should I wear?
- Participants will receive an email with more information about attire, parking, etc--but in general, just wear something you're comfortable in and don't mind moving around in (think: yoga attire).
